Privacy and Confidentiality

Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia manages information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act of Nova Scotia. Information about this act is available at http://foipop.ns.ca and can be made available in our offices. People participating in our services will be told about their rights with regards to confidentiality and the limits of confidentiality by agency staff.    Non-identifying information will be included in organization reports and/or shared with funders.

Questions and/or complaints regarding privacy and confidentiality as they pertain to the programs and services delivered by FSENS may be directed to the agency’s Executive Director; in addition, agency staff will advise clients of their rights with regard to privacy and confidentiality.

Information for Clients and Program Participants

All participants in programs operated by Family Services of Eastern Nova Scotia and all recipients of agency services (hereafter referred to as clients) can expect that all personal information provided to the agency will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

However, under the following conditions we can be required by law to disclose information:

  • if a child or vulnerable person may be in need of protective services
  • if there is an immediate risk that someone is gong to hurt or kill themselves
  • if there is a danger or risk to others
  • supeona or court order

We can share information with other professionals if clients provide consent for us to do so.

Information for Volunteers, Donors, and Supporters

Personal Information: This is any identifying information about an individual or group of individuals. FSENS collects and uses personal information solely for the purpose of providing services and developing an understanding of its clients. FSENS obtains personal information directly from the person to whom the information belongs and will limit the use of any personal information to what is needed for the purpose for which it was collected. Under no circumstances will FSENS sell, distribute or otherwise disclose personal information or contact lists to third party.

Website and Electronic Commerce: Wherever possible, we use password protocols and encryption software to protect personal and other information we receive during the course of agency activities.
